1. When you started ballroom dancing did you ever think why you can’t express your talent completely like you see them on the screen? It could be many things, either you don’t dance to the correct timing, you may not have correct posture, you might not have enough of connection with your partner, or he/she is not willing to consider you as mentor with your existing knowledge you could acquire during this past time.

Timing

Each dance has its own timing, whether its Waltz, or cha cha cha, or jive or samba or Tango. The timing helps both partners to move synchronically and to produce rhythm and beauty to the dance. Sometime you can choreograph it in a way that you can do some other movements and come back to the meeting point where you would end if you were doing the basic movements. This is what international stars does while they choreograph the moves.

For understanding timing you might need to flip some pages from your available music book or related sources. We all know that there are 4 beats in a bar, but not everyone knows which beat is going up or down depending on the time signature. If a beat is going down and if you’re moving up that’s not matching is it?

2/4 as in samba, 4/4 as in cha cha cha and so on. In waltz 3 beats are going upwards and one downwards. This helps the dancers to dance easily without paying much energy and attention to the keep them in track.

You also need to understand the first beat of each bar of the music. Usually it’s the start of music or it could be the start of words in each verse. That’s not everything. You will find 4 beats in one bar which go in one direction and the other 4 beats in an opp. Direction which makes music listenable. So, basically, your dancing should match with the music and if you get a mistake you should be able to catch that up in next moment. This is one particular thing what judges look for.

Beat value

The duration between each beat is termed as beat values. If you divide the beat into 4. you will be able to get 4 quarters. Ie after you hear the beat , a ¼ beat time = you can say a quarter, and after a quarter let one more ¼ beat go then you come to the mid ie between two beats which we call “&”. Leave one more ¼ beat then you find “ah” which is the term used to denote after ¾ time of a beat. Now leave ¼ beat you arrive at the next beat. So that looks like Beat – ¼ - & - ah- 2nd beat – ¼ - & - ah – 3rd beat and so on.

This is very important and also minute things people don’t give attention to. This makes the dance outstanding from others. If not it can look clumsy. It is not that difficult to follow. It is a usual thing all dancers learn in all parts of the world. Self awareness is important here.

Posture

Why do we keep a posture? What if we don’t keep a posture. Infact posture helps you to balance your weight and let you dance with out taking much effort as you would take if you danced with out posture. Lets take an example of surfing boat. He/she uses the waves and use his energy to the minimal to go faster. The same applies here.

Also its important that if you don’t keep the posture it will be like you re doing something which can cause harm to the body. Esp in Paso Doble, if the posture is right you will be able to stand with ease if you sway and try you can see that your upper torso might shiver.

Conclusion.

There are many simple things which we need to pay attention while learning dancing.

Its not that difficult given time. So, the suggestions are listen carefully to the music. Know what you are to do. Know the right foot and balance at the right time of music while dancing ballroom.
